Downtown
Based on a referendum held on January 23, 1894, Tenafly was incorporated as a borough on January 24, 1894, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from portions of the Palisades Township. The borough was the first formed during "Boroughitis" in which 26 boroughs were formed in the county in 1894 alone. Portions of Palisades Township were acquired based on legislation approved on April 8, 1897. (as stated on the Bergen County Clerk website).
With a train depot and post office at the time of incorporation, Tenafly easily attracted businesses to it's commercial district. This page shows just a few of the downtown buildings that range in purpose from a retail store to the first Tenafly firehouse. Other businesses such as the Tenafly Bottling Company found a home in Tenafly as well.
