Montclair man gets Tenafly post
Library director appointed
TENAFLY - Alfred N. Garwood of Montclair has been named director of the public library, replacing Jack Thurber, who has resigned effective Sept. 15.
Garwood's appointment was unanimously approved by the library board of trustees last night. He will begin his duties Oct. 1 . Garwood has been director of the Randolph Township library in Morris County for four years.
The new director, who is 27, is a graduate of New York University and has a master of arts degree from NYU and a masters in library science from Long Island University. He has worked at the Chase Manhattan Library and as reference librarian in the West New York library.
Garwood was among 42 applicants. His salary will be $19,000.
The board also hired Janet W Schwartz of 133 Sunset Lane as children's librarian, also effective Oct. 1. She succeeds Anita Giannelli who resigned in June. Mrs. Schwartz is now working part-time as acting children's librarian.
She has served as assistant director and children's librarian in Washington Township and assistant in the textbook department of Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich publishers.
